Hello, my fellow West Virginians! My name is Jeff Dempsey, and I am a Survivor. Today I'm here to share my story with you, hoping it will help others facing this catastrophic disease. I am a 65-year-old male who was diagnosed on November 8th, 2021, with and treated for stage 3 Breast Cancer.
I discovered a lump early in 2021 at the age of 63 in my left breast. Concerned by the knowledge that I soon discovered about this problem, I started on my quest to seek help. Not having insurance to get a mammogram, I contacted the WVBHI office for help. They paid for me to have a mammogram immediately and an ultrasound, which led to a biopsy and my concrete diagnosis. After this point, I was able to get further assistance from the James "Tiger" Morton Catastrophic Illness Commission and qualified for treatment at UVA, which they graciously completed pro bono.
I can't even begin to tell anyone what I felt other than I was and am still determined NOT to allow this disease be the reason I will depart this world. I have been blessed with love and support by my family, whom I have told from the beginning about my condition. The good people who have been with me from the beginning with not only financial support but also emotional support are my cornerstone. They have offered me endless guidance.
I wish to tell anyone and every one suspicious of this problem, please seek help early. It may be the difference between life and death. Also, I wish to tell everyone that has or will be faced with this to seek out any and all available help.
My desire is to be able to help in any way possible to eradicate this disease. Today I am cancer free, and I hope that everyone presently being treated for this will soon also hear the same message.
This year I hope you will mark your calendars for WVBHI’s annual Race for the Ribbon as we Paint the Town Pink on May 6th, 2023. This event means the world to me and will help us help others. Can I depend on "YOU" to be part of this event that means the "WORLD" to me?
